Still stuck in holiday traffic? (Wry smile.) Pass the time with the APC Union National Day Puzzle Competition! The event uses several formats, tests teamwork, and, most importantly, offers generous prizes. The preliminary round is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. on 10.2, with the final at 8:00 p.m. on 10.3. We will ultimately name a champion, runner-up, and third-place finisher!
So, what everyone really wants to know: What are the prizes?
●Prize pool: The books The Evolution of Physics, What Is Physics?, The Shape of Time, Does God Play Dice?, and Miracles at the Edge; the toys Newton’s cradle, chaotic pendulum, and balancing figure; and cash red packets of up to 20 yuan. Prizes are combined according to rank and points as follows:
★Champion 🏆:
Final score above 80: Choose any two books + one toy + 20 yuan.
Final score 60–79: Choose any one book + one toy + 15 yuan.
Final score below 60: Choose any one book + 10 yuan.
★Runner-up:
Final score above 75: Choose any one book + one toy + 15 yuan.
Final score 55–74: Choose any one book + 10 yuan.
Final score below 55: Choose any one toy + 5 yuan.
★Third place:
Final score above 70: Choose any one book + 10 yuan.
Final score below 70: One month of QQ membership or 5 yuan.

APC will hold Season 1 of its Science Communication and Debate Competition from 8/3 to 10/15, with generous prizes. Every Union member may take part. Contests are held in this group, and members of outside organizations may enter as organized teams. An administrator must approve the content of every session. Register with administrator A3.
Science communication:

1. Contestants should prepare their own science communication script. The subject may be natural science, philosophy, or any other positive, rule-compliant topic, and administrator A3 must review it. Presentations may take place in this group each day from 8:00 to 10:00, 13:00 to 15:00, or 18:00 to 22:00. No more than three contestants may present per day. Group members will score each presentation by vote under real-time administrative supervision. After a presentation, up to 10 audience members may ask the contestant as many as 30 questions, provided they are not unreasonably difficult; answering is optional. The highest-rated contestant will be selected at the end of the season.
2. Contestants may instead write a science article or produce a video and upload it to the group for members to score.

Debate: Contestants should form affirmative and negative teams, agree on a motion, and submit it to an administrator for review under the same content rules as the science communication contest. No debate may have more than 8 participants, and neither side may have more than 4. Members may select their own moderator. Members will score the debate afterward, and contestants may enter more than once.

APC’s birthday is almost here. To celebrate the anniversary, we plan to hold a large general-knowledge quiz in the main group on 7.7, Saturday, or 7.8, Sunday. We expect to select 10–12 contestants, with several prizes for the top three and perhaps some hidden awards as well. This is your chance to show what you can do. If you want to make an impression, register now!

Event 1: Physics Postcard Submissions

Remember the chemistry postcard submissions for the Union’s first anniversary? We selected outstanding entries and turned them into postcards. This time, physics enthusiasts can show their writing skills too! Send us your own expression of what physics means to you. We will turn every submission into a postcard, and each participant will receive one copy free. Other friends are welcome to buy them as well.

Event 2: Lunar New Year Subject Mascot Design Competition

Ta-da! The Lunar New Year is almost here, and the long-awaited winter break is approaching. APC is seeking mascot designs for five subjects: astronomy, physics, chemistry, mathematics, and biology. You may draw only one or create designs for all five.
After a vote, the design with the most votes will become APC’s mascot for 2018!
